The air travel misery will probably get worse. Massive flight cancellations by American Airlines -- including 16 at Denver International Airport on Thursday -- are likely to spread to other carriers as federal regulators step up their scrutiny of aircraft inspections after years of more lenient enforcement. And as oversight tightens and Congress puts its glare on the airlines, passengers are paying the price. Flying on U.S. airlines has never been safer. But mutual trust between the Federal Aviation Administration and carriers was undermined by last month's revelation that Southwest Airlines flew planes that had missed inspections -- a violation of federal standards.

Computer displays that fit into contact lenses, machines that assemble themselves, tools that let a doctor see precisely which of your cells has cancer, and nanodevices that monitor your health and dispense medicines -- these are just some of the projects that Iranian-American scientist and researcher Babak Parviz of the University of Washington is pursuing. In an age of narrow specialization, a list of Parviz's accomplishments looks like that of several different scientists rather than just one. Parviz is a leader in such exotic topics as bionanotechnology, self-assembly, nanofabrication and microelectricalmechanical engineering.

South Korea announced Monday that a woman who is a bioengineering student would become its first astronaut. She is scheduled to blast off on board a Russian Soyuz rocket on April 8 on a trip to the International Space Station that will be watched on television by millions of South Koreans. The astronaut, Yi So-yeon, 29, was selected after the Russian space authorities accused the South Korean man who was initially chosen for the mission of breaking training rules. While South Korea appeared unhappy that it had been asked to make the switch so close to the scheduled launching, women’s groups said Ms. Yi’s participation was likely to further improve the status of women in South Korea’s traditionally male-dominated society.

The Senate yesterday approved the most far-reaching changes to the nation's product safety system in a generation, responding to recalls of millions of lead-laced toys that rattled consumers last year.
Lawmakers still have to resolve key differences between the Senate bill and a similar measure that passed the House in December. While the Senate version is considered by consumer advocates to be tougher, both contain provisions that would require retailers and manufacturers to be more vigilant about product safety.

A US warship is moving into position in the western Pacific in preparation to shoot down an out-of-control spy satellite before it re-enters Earth's atmosphere, Pentagon officials have said. The first attempt to destroy the secret US satellite - said to be about the size of a bus - could take place as early as Wednesday night US time. US military officials say the satellite is carrying highly toxic hydrazine rocket fuel that could be dangerous if it fell on a populated area. The decision to shoot it down has been criticised by China which has hinted that it believes the move is a cover for testing anti-satellite weaponry.
