The Taliban has said two attacks on Dutch forces in Afghanistan were in retaliation for an anti-Islamic film by a Dutch politician, the SITE Intelligence Group said on Tuesday. In a communique posted on Web sites used by militants dated April 1, the Taliban said its Shura Council Leadership announced reprisal operations against Dutch forces because "one of the members of the Dutch parliament produced a film that hurts Islam, and he published it with bad intentions".

Osama bin Laden, in a new audio message posted Wednesday, condemned the publication of drawings that he said insulted the Prophet Muhammad and warned Europeans of a "severe" reaction to come. The message, which appeared on a militant Web site that has carried al-Qaida statements in the past and bore the logo of the extremist group's media wing al-Sahab, showed a still image of bin Laden aiming with an assault rifle. "The response will be what you see and not what you hear and let our mothers bereave us if we do not make victorious our messenger of God," said a voice believed to be bin Laden's, without specifying what action would be taken.

A group of Southern Baptist leaders said Monday that the denomination has been "too timid" on environmental issues and has a biblical duty to stop global warming.
The declaration was signed by the president of the Southern Baptist Convention, two former presidents and others. The denomination is the largest Protestant group in the United States, with 16.3 million members.
The signers of "A Southern Baptist Declaration on the Environment and Climate Change" said that current evidence of global warming is "substantial," and that the threat is too grave to wait for perfect knowledge about whether, or how much, people contribute to the problem.

Baghdad Suicide Bombing 26 people killed and more than 50 injuring
Posted on Mar 05 2007 4:49 AM by AffableJewel
Filed Under: Religion ,

The attack near the well-known Mutanabi book market in central Baghdad was the first major blast in the city in several days - sending a huge pillar of black smoke as flames spread to shops, cars and book stalls.

The death toll from police was preliminary and could rise. At least 54 people were injured. The commercial zone is mixed between Sunni- and Shiite-owned businesses and shoppers.

``Papers from the book market were floating through the air like leaflets dropped from a plane,'' said Naeem al-Daraji, a Health Ministry worker who was driving about 200 yards from the blast and was slightly injured by broken glass from his car window.

KABUL, Afghanistan -- A suicide bombing aimed at a US military convoy triggered a chaotic round of gunfire on a busy highway in eastern Afghanistan yesterday, leaving at least eight Afghan civilians dead and about three dozen others wounded, officials said.

The attack and resulting gunfire, which occurred outside the city of Jalalabad, set off a stone-throwing riot in which hundreds of protesters, alleging that US troops fired indiscriminately on civilians, shouted slogans denouncing the United States and the government of President Hamid Karzai.

It was the highest civilian death toll this year in a matter involving US or other foreign troops. Such casualties erode public support for Karzai's government, and the Afghan president has made repeated public appeals to allied forces to exercise greater care to avoid killing or wounding civilians.

Attack on Iran will Likely Backfire

TEHRAN (Fars News Agency)- Oxford researchers say aerial attack will not only fail to hinder nuclear development but also spur Iran's drive for achieving nuclear power.

An Oxford University study claims a US attack of Iran's nuclear facilities will backfire - both failing to destroy the centrifuges being used to enrich uranium and lead Iran to step up its push for nuclear power, a report published Monday by British daily the Guardian said.

In a report for the Oxford Research Group (ORG) arms and nuclear expert Dr. Frank Barnaby, a British nuclear weapons scientist, also claims that an attack on the Bushehr nuclear facility will likely result in large-scale damage to the surrounding area. According to Barnaby the number of civilian casualties risked in such an attack will be very high since there will be no warning in advance and most will be caught unprepared.

Top Taliban leader 'arrested'
Posted on Mar 02 2007 7:48 AM by AffableJewel
Filed Under: Religion ,

One of the Taliban's three most senior leaders has been captured by Pakistani security forces, a security official and Taliban sources have said.

Mullah Obaidullah Akhund, the third most senior member of the Taliban's 10-member leadership council, was arrested late on Monday in the southwest city of Quetta.

If confirmed, Akhund's capture would mark the first Pakistan arrest of a senior Taliban leader since it was driven from power in Afghanistan in 2001.

Akhund's capture came just hours after Dick Cheney, the US vice-president, paid an unannounced visit to Pakistan earlier during the week.

Aside from being on the leadership council headed by Mullah Mohammad Omar, Akhund was also defence minister in the Taliban government before it fell.
