Small-arms fire killed two US soldiers and wounded three south of Baghdad, the American military said. The soldiers were killed as they were leaving the Madain town council office at around 1:00 pm (1000 GMT), the military said. Three other soldiers and an interpreter were wounded in the attack, while the troops killed the gunman who attacked them.

An Iraqi security official said the soldiers were fired on by town councilors Ra'ad Hamud Ajil when they came to the council offices in Madain, also known as Salman Pak. "Ajil opened fire on the troops when they came to the council office," the Iraqi official told foreign news agency. "He has been killed in the clash."
